It really was Dex. He was standing close enough to be seen clearly now.

He was leaning against the brick wall in the half-empty parking lot beside the tennis club, his hands shoved into his jeans pockets. Even in the sunlight, his skin looked green.

Almost reptilian, Joanna thought queasily.

Dex had been looking at the ground, but now he looked up and directed his stare at them.

Does he see us? Joanna wondered.

He must. He's looking right at me.

Shep reached into his pocket for the car keys, dropped them on the floor.

Joanna stared across the street at Dex.

Dex's eyes caught hers. They suddenly seemed to glow ruby-red, like the red eyes in a bad flash photo. Glowing red eyes like a dog's eyes at night.
